Wordless Wednesday: Out of Garlic

IMG_6525

I’m never out of garlic, and yet yesterday when I wondered about what would go in the potato leek soup we made for dinner, I found I had only the shriveled remnants of my normally plump reserve.  There were no shallots, and I couldn’t find an onion, either.  Cooking just isn’t the same for me without these flavors.  I roast garlic and smear it on crostini, flavor oil with it to drizzle over roasted vegetables, saute it with almost everything, smash it and sprinkle on some sea salt to make a paste, mince it, cook whole heads in their papery skin, and wince when I find I’m out.

Have you had your garlic today?

    Oops!
That’s happened to me so often. And your photo made me smile- very familiar.

  2. Don’t know what I would do if I ran out of garlic. The kitchen would come to a screeching halt.

    Lovely photo.

  3. We’ve been using lots of it because I hear it’s good for the immune system.

Only have half a fist of garlic left. That’ll go in a couple days. I do have 6 onions, though, and 2 shallots. :)

    OUT of garlic??!! Shocking.

We have a plethora of garlic right now — lots of varieties from a great little farm that brings its store to the farmer’s market. But, I’m so used to having bunches of it around that it will be a RUDE awakening when we finally run low. I just know it.

I think I need to plant garlic for next year because the supermarket garlic is dead. No, I can’t imagine cooking without it.

  7. Garlic is right up there with my morning coffee– can’t live without it!

  8. I haven’t had my weekly dose of garlic but I really hate it when I am making something and then realize that I don’t have one of the ingredients. That has happened to me so many times.

We are the same at my house. I tend to hoard it for fear of running out. I roast some nearly every day to have on our bread with dinner. I could swim in the stuff!

Get thyself to the nearest farmers market…

  10. This JUST happened to me too…with 2 heads! I’m buying garlic in smaller quantities from now on.

I’m often out of garlic, but most of the time not out of onion (we buy a 10kg bag when we can :P ) I do hate it when it happens though

  12. I HATE when this happens! Fortunately my winter share from my CSA is packed with onions, leeks and garlic so I’m covered for awhile. Great to meet you at Foodbuzz also – can you remind me which sites you post your photo links on? I use foodgawker, tastespotting, photograzing and foodview, but you mentioned one I hadn’t heard of – started with an S? THX – Michele
